ETW25-26 Navigating Differences

Section 13: Navigating Differences Within and Without
Instructor: Elly Lin, PsyD
Date: May 6, 2026
Description: This class will introduce Gareth Hill’s model of the Self, a model that builds on Jungian concepts of the Self, anima and animus, and archetypes, and provides a structure within which both the plurality of the individual psyche and the cultural diversity of any given group can be examined, understood, and embraced. The first hour will introduce Hill’s model of the Self; the second hour will consist of discussions of clinical cases. Class participants will be encouraged to relate to Hill’s model of the Self by applying it in personal as well as clinical contexts.
Main Teaching Points
Teaching Point 1: The four basic archetypal patterns of the Self can be used to describe intrapsychic dynamics, interpersonal dynamics, and cultural patterns. Teaching Point 2: Use the four basic archetypal patterns of the Self to understand cultural patterns in the clinical context.
Learning Objective:
Participants will learn about the qualities of the four basic archetypal patterns of the Self, and learn to identify them both internally and externally. Participants will hopefully develop an interest in future learning how the model can be applied clinically.
