Jung often contemplated how much Westerners would be swept away by Eastern practices, such as yoga and meditation. He expected an explosion of interest. And he was right. Since the 1960s, these practices and their associated higher states of consciousness have become central facets of our culture. Clients are going to be dealing with experiences related to these phenomena, some traumatic and some transcendental, and therapists need to be knowledgeable about all aspects of this cultural shift. This presentation will be divided into two parts. First, an objective overview of the Buddhist and Vedanta schools, their Western offshoots, mediation methods being taught, and their shared goal of nirvana, liberation, Self-realization, awakening, or permanent non-dual awareness. Second, an exploration of how Jungian concepts such as archetype, complex, transference, and projection play out in this cultural phenomenon and in relationships with spiritual teachers.
