This course explores the archetype of the Mother, recognized by Jung as the symbolic source of life and the primordial unconscious. The Great Mother manifests in diverse forms, from the Hindu goddess Kali to Gaia, embodying life’s continuation but with no commitment to individual lives. Over time, Western culture has split this archetype into the Good Mother, epitomized by the Virgin Mary, and the shadowy Bad Mother. Marie-Louise von Franz introduced the term “Death Mother” for the archetype’s shadow side, which emerges in possessively devouring forms in fairy tales and psycho- logical expressions. Jung described this archetype as embodying hidden, terrifying, and inescapable forces, symbolizing destruction and poison.
Clinically, the Death Mother may manifest in maternal complexes like the vampire mother, depressed mother, or overly idealized “Too Good” mother. Drawing on Marion Woodman’s work, the course will bring compassionate understanding to the Death Mother archetype, fostering awareness and revitalizing the parts of us that have been suppressed or killed off.
