When Movies Dream of Memory
When Movies Dream of Memory
Saturday, January 23rd
2pm - 4:30pm
Livestream Only
Tuition: $60
Memories, movies, and dreams are kindred, synergistic imaginal mediums. Each transports us beyond the ordinary, weaving image and story into moving pictures suffused with symbolic meaning. Inspired by depth psychology, mythic imagination, film language and dream, we'll view scenes from multiple memory-centered films, amplifying symbol, technique and style. Common types of cinematic memory will be considered: opening scenes, nightmares, reveries, fantasies, revelations. Surveying dream sequences from an array of filmmakers will illuminate the diverse ways the mythopoetic nature of memory is expressed cinematically. Through lecture, close analysis of film clips, discussion and integrative practice, this program aims to deepen participant visual literacy, dream wisdom, and depth psychological film appreciation. Films include: The Long Day Closes; The Elephant Man; All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt; The Nickel Boys; Train Dreams; The Sound of Falling.
