ETW25-26 Improvisation within the Analytic Frame
Section 11: Improvisation within an Analytic Frame
Instructor: Instructor: Sanford Pepper, MD Dates: March 25, April 1, 15, 22, 2026
This course delves into the inherent "music" present within the analytic encounter between therapist and patient. Our primary objective is to explore how an understanding of the jazz improvisational process can profoundly enhance this "music" and the improvisational interplay within the therapeutic dyad.
The Presenter's Intent: My aim is to illuminate how improvisational concepts can be applied to attune to the rhythm of a session, helping therapists connect with the essential resonance that develops between themselves and their patients. The course posits that a distinct rhythm, melody, and harmony are expressed by a therapeutic dyad. By consciously recognizing the elements of jazz improvisation, participants will learn to experience the patient's clinical material and the therapist's response as a complex, transformative process. This process mirrors the emergence of the new from the established, akin to the improvisational elements found in a jazz composition1.
