Donald Meltzer, a neo-Kleinian, theorized that, like an ordinary mother’s devotion to their child in their speech and gestures, an analyst's way of speaking to the truth of their patient's experience entails appreciating beauty. This appreciation helps patients develop an aesthetic sense of their own that fosters the individuation process. In short, beauty and truth are intrinsically related in psychological development as well as in analysis. Both Jung and Freud appreciated both truth and beauty in their work and throughout their lives. In this two-session course, I will attempt to elaborate upon these themes in both men’s work and lives. What exactly are their truths and notions of beauty, and how did they come to know these truths? What kind of therapeutic action do these truths elucidate in the consulting room and for our world that seems badly in need of truth and beauty?
