A critical cultural analysis and critique of Jung’s experiences and projections onto people and customs in the African Diaspora. What did he see  - and not see - in himself and others?

The life and work of C.G. Jung are examined within the framework of the African Diaspora, offering an informative cultural critique of attitudes held by Jung and analytical psychology toward people of African ancestry. This program traces the origins and emergence of the African Diaspora, from the cultural unconscious in Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean and Europe. From the archetypal perspective of the Egyptian Goddess MAAT, as embodied principles of truth and justice, it further explores the intersections of psychology, law, geopolitics and economics in the Pan-African, African-Caribbean and African-American independence and freedom movements as a collective response to European cultural hegemony. Eurocentrism surely influenced Jung’s views of “Other” during his time. Current controversies within the International Association for Analytical Psychology community over Jung’s attitudes towards Africans and African-Americans as “Other,” speak to needed revisions in the theory, training and practice of a more globally inclusive and culturally diverse analytical psychology.

ALAN G. VAUGHAN PHD, JD, is in private practice as a clinical and consulting psychologist in Oakland CA, and is an analyst member of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco. He serves on the core faculty at Saybrook University with interests at the intersection of analytical psychology, historiography, law and African Diaspora studies.
